Courage Igene has been an active leader in his community for many years demonstrating a long list of effective leadership qualities.
Being a leader is not easy but we will all in some capacity have a chance to lead at some point in our lives – be it in our careers, our families, community groups, and beyond. Leadership is a unique task, inviting someone to follow and do as you are doing requires strength but humility. The degree to which you can balance self-respect with respect for those beneath you will ultimately determine the success of your leadership endeavors. Below, Founder and President of All Nations Church Courage Igene discusses a few essential leadership characteristics that have helped him gain success along the way.
For others to follow you, you yourself need to have a vision. It is quite difficult to follow someone who is vague about what they are after. Focusing on a specific direction helps others to be on the same page as you are.
Confidence certainly goes a long way in leadership. And be warned, confidence is not equal to arrogance. Arrogance will repel people, but a sense of surety and certainty about who you are and what you are doing will go a long way to earn other people’s trust.
Integrity is a difficult one because it is a subtle quality that is usually proved over time. To have integrity means to be true to your principles. Courage Igene likes to remember this definition of integrity: ‘integrity means doing the right thing, even when no one is watching.’ If you are a leader with a heart of gold, you will be easy to follow.
Your ability to inspire others will carry you as a leader. Just think of some of the more notorious leaders of our world history. Inspiration does not necessarily mean outspokenness or extroversion but it is important to have a dream. This ties nicely with the characteristic of focus, inspiration is your destination and focus is the drive to get you there.
Passion is the heart of what you are doing as a leader. Passion is what gets you out of bed in the morning and brings a warmth to all you say and do. Without passion, your work will be dry and flavorless. If you do not feel passionate, you need to make some changes in whatever means possible to keep your work alive.
Without decisiveness, it is very difficult to get anything done, you will agree! The opposite of decisiveness is procrastination. A good way to avoid procrastination for Courage Igene is to ‘do what can be done today’, imagine that tomorrow will have its own problems, the problems within your sights now are today’s tasks!
To get everyone on the same page is one of the marks of a true leader. Bringing a group together and clearly communicating your passion, decision, focus and inspiration will help others to join in with your cause. If you feel you are not good at communication, do a small course on talking, presentation or writing skills. You need to be able to get your idea across effectively.
A leader has to answer to somebody. The moment power goes to your head, you have isolated yourself from the world and have marked your own descent. You are just as human as everyone else and you need to have someone who knows exactly what you are doing and can hold you true over time to your passion, inspiration and integrity.
Being a leader is a great task and the greatest leaders develop these qualities over time. Courage Igene encourages you to go forth and lead!
